Freebie Wednesday

It has been fun playing around with glass tiles these past few days. Today's freebie is this glass tile necklace with a vintage typewriter print from a 1912 Encyclopedia.
And I took this picture at about 4 am so it isn't the greatest but the necklace is cute :)

Weekend Movie Review

We rented 4 movies this weekend.

No Country For Old Men ~ This scared the crap out of me but I loved it. The ending was not the typical Hollywood movie ending so I had to ponder it. Mr. Keys actually liked it which is a surprise because he is so picky.

High School Musical ~ Loved it! Reminded me of Grease and I thought it was cute.

National Treasure 2 Book of Secrets ~ So So- Pretty much a repeat of the first one.

PS I Love You ~ I am about 1/2 way through it. Haven't formed an opinion yet.

Gas Saving Alternatives

With the price of gas skyrocketing everyone is looking for alternatives. Horse and wagon is my top choice, unfortunately I own neither. Some of them are impractical for the area I live in which has hills. Skateboarding and roller skates conjure up images of broken limbs.
I have considered a moped but can't figure out where the groceries would fit although the guy on the bike with a 10 ton load looks like he has figured out this issue.
There is bus service in my town but I think the closest stop mean using my feet to get there.
I do use my feet quite a bit and walk my daughter up the hill to preschool 2 days a week. Making the track back and forth 2 times a day for pick up and drop off in the humidity really takes a lot out of me and I am not getting any younger.
Someday I wonder if we will go back to the horse and buggy- For trips to the grocery store I would look forward to it.

Customer Appreciation Picture

One of the features I haven't used much on Etsy but I got on the ball about it this weekend.

A few buyers have used it to send me a picture of them wearing the jewelry I made- that was cool.

I used it for a DIY kit I bought of a sock money to show her our completed project.

Being that I work with typewriters this picture seemed perfect!

Here are some more items.....

It was nice to see a new feature rolled out on Etsy this past week. Sold items now show items from the seller that are available. I like this feature! If you want to see what your sold items look like you must be logged out to view your own shop.

Handmade Toys

I was looking for something hand made for my grandsons birthday and remembered Etsy user Geppetto from the forums.
I picked up a few wooden toys that I know will be a hit!

Planned Obsolescence ~ R.I.P Rotary Tool

From Wikipedia:

Planned obsolescence is the process of a product becoming obsolete and/or non-functional after a certain period or amount of use in a way that is planned or designed by the manufacturer.[1] Planned obsolescence has potential benefits for a producer because the product fails and the consumer is under pressure to purchase again, whether from the same manufacturer (a replacement part or a newer model), or from a competitor which might also rely on planned obsolescence.[1]

For an industry, planned obsolescence stimulates demand by encouraging purchasers to buy again sooner if they still want a functioning product. Built-in obsolescence is in many different products, from vehicles to light bulbs, from buildings to software. There is, however, the potential backlash of consumers who learn that the manufacturer invested money to make the product obsolete faster; such consumers might turn to a producer, if any, which offers a more durable alternative.

Planned obsolescence was first developed in the 1920s and 1930s when mass production had opened every minute aspect of the production process to exacting analysis. END QUOTE

Today my Black and Decker Rotary Tool but the dust. Poor little gal she served me well for about 7 months. I did put a lot of miles on her but still was surprised she kicked the bucket.

I had this happen with my Dremel. With the Dremel I called the company and was able to get the inner replacement part that wears down with use. That saved me from throwing it away and I kept the dremel as a back up when I got the Black and Decker. So no sweat- I will just order the part from B and D right? Nope- they don't make them. The rep does tell me though that I can get a replacement since I have had it less than 2 years if I read her the serial number on it, To my surprise it was made in 2005 and must have been on the shelves for 2 years as I bought it in 2007. So, no replacement parts and no warranty coverage.

Basically I have an item that now must go in the landfill. Kind of sad...

The Twilight Zone

My 15 year old daughter has been reading the Twilight books and is a big fan.
She used my lap top and promptly set the screen to her liking.

I knew to look no further than Etsy for a piece of Twilight jewelry for her and picked this up from bethtastic.

I know she will love it.
